Maine Coon Health & Genetic Testing

Every buyer of a purebred cat deserves a clear, honest picture of the breed's health. The Maine Coon is generally robust, but like all pedigreed breeds it carries a handful of conditions that responsible breeders screen for. We would rather you understand these than gloss over them.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most important. It is the most common heart disease in cats, and in Maine Coons a specific mutation — A31P in the MYBPC3 gene — is associated with increased risk. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern with incomplete penetrance, meaning a cat can carry the mutation and never develop disease, while some cats without it still do. A DNA test identifies the mutation, but it is not the whole story: the mutation is not the sole cause of HCM. That is why conscientious programs pair DNA testing with cardiac screening — an echocardiogram by a veterinary cardiologist.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is caused by a deletion affecting the LIX1 gene and is inherited recessively — a kitten must inherit two copies to be affected. Symptoms appear around three to four months of age as muscle weakness in the hindquarters. Importantly, SMA is neither painful nor fatal; affected cats can live comfortable indoor lives. A simple DNA test lets breeders avoid pairing two carriers.

Hip dysplasia and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) are also discussed in the breed. Screening — radiographs for hips, DNA and ultrasound where appropriate — helps breeders make informed pairings.

What responsible testing looks like: genetic (DNA) blood testing of breeding cats, and cardiac testing as part of the program. That is our standard, and it is a fair question to ask of any breeder.
