How to Choose a Maine Coon Breeder

Bringing home a Maine Coon is a significant decision, and the breeder you choose matters as much as the kitten. The Maine Coon's popularity has, unfortunately, attracted both careless breeders and outright scams. Here is how to protect yourself and find a program you can trust.

Ask about health testing. A responsible breeder DNA tests their breeding cats and includes cardiac screening. Ask specifically what they test for, and don't accept vague reassurances. "Vet checked" is not the same as genetic and cardiac testing.

Ask how kittens are raised. Kittens should be raised underfoot in a home, handled daily, and well socialized — not isolated in a garage or kennel. This shapes temperament for life.

Ask what comes home with the kitten. Expect veterinary records, age-appropriate vaccinations, registration, a health guarantee, and a contract. Transparency here is a very good sign.

Ask about the contract and expectations. Spay/neuter terms, indoor-only living, no declawing, and lifelong-care commitments are hallmarks of a breeder who cares where their kittens end up.

Notice how they treat you. A good breeder asks you questions, too. They want their kittens in the right homes, and they'll be honest — including about the breed's challenges. Beware anyone who pressures you, won't answer plainly, asks for payment by untraceable methods, or has endless kittens always available.

Look for a relationship, not a transaction. The best breeders stay in your life long after pickup. You are not just buying a kitten; you are joining a program's extended family.
