Preparing for Your Kitten

A little preparation makes homecoming calm for everyone — especially the kitten, who is leaving the only home they've known. Before go-home day, set up a quiet, welcoming space and gather the essentials.

Create a starter room. Rather than giving a new kitten the run of the whole house at once, set up one quiet room with their litter box, food, water, a bed, and a few toys. A smaller world is less overwhelming; you can expand their territory over the following days as they gain confidence.

Have the essentials ready: a large litter box (Maine Coons grow big — size up), the food they've been eating to keep their diet consistent, food and water dishes, a scratching post or cat tree, safe toys, a comb for early grooming habits, and a cozy bed.

Kitten-proof. Tuck away loose cords, secure toxic plants and cleaning products, check that window screens are secure, and remove small items a curious kitten could swallow.

Plan the first vet visit. Line up a veterinarian before your kitten arrives and schedule a wellness check within the first week, bringing the health records that come home with them.

Go slow with introductions. Give the kitten time before introducing resident pets or a busy household. Let them come to you. Maine Coons are confident, social cats, but a gentle, patient first week builds a bond that lasts a lifetime.
