Recommended Supplies

Maine Coons are big, intelligent, active cats, and a few thoughtful choices make daily life better for them and easier for you. Here's what we recommend.

Litter box — size up. A full-grown Maine Coon needs a large box, bigger than standard. Many families use extra-large boxes or storage totes. Have at least one per cat, plus one, in quiet, accessible spots.

Food and dishes. Keep the diet they came home on, and use wide, shallow bowls (whisker-friendly) or a raised feeder. Stainless steel or ceramic is easier to keep clean than plastic.

A sturdy cat tree. Maine Coons love to climb and survey their world, and they are heavy — buy a tall, well-anchored tree rated for large cats. Vertical space is one of the best investments you can make.

Scratching surfaces. Provide sturdy vertical scratchers and horizontal options. Good scratching outlets protect your furniture and your cat's claws.

Grooming tools. A quality stainless-steel comb is the single most useful grooming tool for this coat, along with nail clippers.

Enrichment. These are smart, playful cats. Wand toys, puzzle feeders, and interactive play keep their minds and bodies healthy — a bored Maine Coon will invent its own entertainment.

The basics: a large, comfortable carrier, a cozy bed (they may prefer the floor near you — that's fine), and fresh water available at all times, ideally in more than one spot.

You don't need everything at once. Start with the essentials and build as you learn your particular cat's preferences.
