Understanding Color Genetics

Maine Coons come in a remarkable range of colors and patterns, and a little genetics makes the variety far less mysterious. Here are the basics.

Base color starts with two pigments: black and red. A gene for dilution softens these — black becomes blue (gray), and red becomes cream. So a "blue" Maine Coon is genetically a diluted black.

Tabby is the patterned coat most people picture, and it comes in forms: classic (bold, swirled bullseye markings), mackerel (narrow vertical stripes), and ticked. Every red cat shows some tabby pattern, and the agouti gene determines whether tabby striping appears at all.

Solid cats carry a non-agouti gene that hides the tabby pattern, producing an even color like solid black or blue.

Smoke and silver come from the inhibitor gene, which suppresses pigment at the base of each hair. On a solid cat this creates a smoke — color on top, silvery-white roots that flash when the cat moves. On a tabby it creates a silver tabby. Golden is a related, rarer expression that gives a warm, glowing undercoat.

White and bicolor patterns come from separate spotting genes; a fully white cat carries a dominant white gene that masks whatever color lies beneath.

You don't need to master genetics to love a Maine Coon — but understanding that "blue tabby," "black smoke," or "golden shaded" each describes a specific combination of these building blocks makes the beauty of the breed even richer.
