Growth: What to Expect

One of the most charming and misunderstood things about Maine Coons is how long they take to grow up. While most cats reach their adult size by a year, a Maine Coon continues filling out for three to five years. The kitten you bring home is the very beginning of a long, rewarding development.

Expect growth in stages. The first months bring rapid gains in length and height. Then comes a gangly adolescence, when a young cat can look all legs and ears before their body catches up. Substance — the breadth of chest, the boning, the full ruff and britches — arrives slowly and continues well into adulthood. Males in particular can keep broadening and developing muscle and a fuller face for years.

This slow maturity is why we resist the online obsession with enormous weights and record-breaking sizes. A sound, well-proportioned Maine Coon developing at a healthy pace is far more valuable than a cat pushed to be big. Feeding for steady growth, keeping a lean and athletic body condition, and providing room to climb and play all support proper development.

Patience is part of loving this breed. The reward is watching a kitten unfold, year after year, into the magnificent cat they were always going to become.
